Elena Vasiliadou

Elena is currently studying (BA) Fine Art at Kingston University. She is a young experimental artist and mainly works with everyday objects such as mirrors. Elena’s work often incorporates text while in some cases her works consist of words only. Her inspiration is found in philosophers such as Jacques Lacan as well as in mythology and literature. Some of her works are confessional and often explore the definition as well as the history and personalization of the object.

We See Ourselves Reflected In Others

Elena's work We See Ourselves Reflected In Others deals with issue of the self within text. Perhaps what Elena attemps to evoke is the reality of the fact that all we know about ourselves is lots of the times other people's perception of us. It could also mean that we often judge ourselves or define ourselves according to other people's standarts or achievments. Furthermore we also tent to reject ourselves in the eyes of others or because of others. The bold letters WE and OTHERS might also refer to the universality of the self and the similarities we all aquire as humans. However the text is open to the audience's translation of its meaning. In some way, the text becomes our mirror in which we search meaning in ourselves.
